[December 2020] The holidays are always a stressful time, and this year the pressures are heightened as local families face increases in job losses, hunger and poverty due to the pandemic. Members of the Rotary Club of Corning are committed to serving the critical needs of our local community during these unprecedented times, as evidenced by its recent donation to the Salvation Army Corning Corps.
To support the Salvation Army in its mission to provide for families and individuals living in poverty, members of the Corning Rotary Club donated $1,600 to the cause. The Club’s Board of Directors then voted to match those donations dollar for dollar, and on December 4, 2020 Club President Paula Smith presented Salvation Army Captain Melissa Borrero with a “big check” for $3,200.
According to the Salvation Army’s website, “Every year, parents must choose between giving their children gifts or paying bills. Individuals facing poverty often spend the holidays without the warmth of a shared meal or even a support system. From gifts for children in need to special meals for those who would otherwise go without fellowship on the holidays and meeting other basic needs - we aim to bring joy back into the season.”
Especially this year, Corning Rotary is proud and thankful to be able to continue its long tradition of providing Service Above Self to members of the greater Corning community.
