After some inevitable technical issues, President-elect Stu Sammis called the meeting to order at 12:18 p.m. and shared a video rendition of My Country Tis of Thee from Crosby, Stills and Nash. After the Pledge of Allegiance, Stu led the participants in a recitation of the Four-Way Test.  Wendy Winnett delivered the invocation.

Program: Paula Smith introduced Kate Fuller, Director of Development at the Clemens Center.

Kate joined the Center in October 2021. Kate shared some fun facts about the history of the Clemens Center, which first opened as the Keeney Theater on December 21, 1925. Did you know that jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald helped inaugurate the renovated and reimagined Clemens Center with a performance in 1977? Kate also discussed current programming, fundraising initiatives and the many Volunteer Opportunities with The Clemens Center. See the video for details on how you can participate and share your time and talents with this outstanding community organization.

Meeting adjourned.

SBA Assistance for Our Area

Corning NY Rotarians: we received this information [see below and this brochure] from Carl Dombek. Please read through the information for your use or to share with people in the locations affected by Tropical Storm Fred. Carl has been in the region recently -- to help make sure that local businesses are aware of this assistance program.

.... As you’re no doubt aware, Steuben County and the surrounding area was hit hard by Tropical Storm Fred last summer.  Now, the U.S. Small Business Administration has declared the areas “disaster areas,” making low-interest loans available to those who were damaged. Importantly, this help is NOT just for small businesses.  Homeowners, renters, nonprofit organizations and businesses of all sizes can apply for loans to help pay for damages not covered by other sources.  Because of the time elapsed since the event, it’s quite possible that people have made repairs and funded those repairs using their credit cards, loans or other resources.  In such cases, it’s allowable to use SBA disaster loan funds to pay off higher-rate credit cards or loans, or even reimburse savings, to the extent they were used to pay for repairs. And with interest rates as low as 1.563% for homeowners and renters, that could make financial sense.

I note that the agenda is set for your Feb. 10 meeting.  However, if you could share the attached flyer with your membership, it would go a long way toward informing those who may need this vital form of federal assistance. I have also attached a fact sheet for your reference.  Please call or email if I can provide any additional information.

Kind regards,
Carl Dombek, Public Affairs Specialist
