Club Meeting 06-16-2022
The club met for lunch at noon at First Presbyterian Church. President Jeff called the meeting to order at 12:10 pm with the ringing of the Rotary bell.  This was followed by the singing of My Country ‘Tis of Thee and recitation of the pledge of allegiance and the Four-Way Test. Wendy Winnett gave the invocation.

Jim Webb with help from Wendy and Les served as photographer and Ernie Danforth was the Cogs editor.

Announcements:
  • The changeover picnic is scheduled for Thursday, June 23rd at 5:00 at the pavilion in McKinney Park.  $15 pay at the “door” by check or cash for adults and $12 for children. The picnic starts at 5 pm and Les encourages attendance since there will be some Paul Harris surprises.
  • Ernie read a note from Mike Platt.
Thanks for the dues reminder, and it was good to hear from you. I did not receive a copy of Stu’s letter, so if you could forward another copy, I would appreciate that.  Please change my email to Mike5809@outlook.com; My Gmail address has become swamped by hundreds of junk purveyors.

Merle and I are comfortably settled into the warm South (It is in the 90’s today), well looked after by our Daughter and Son-in-law whose professional lives both include HVAC.

Merle is being helped 20 hours a day by a small team of caregivers and is doing as well as can be expected. She is confined to bed or a wheelchair. I still have some hope that I can join one of the local Rotary Clubs, but transportation is becoming a bit of an issue. I still read the Cogs and the District Newsletters when I find them buried in my inbox.

Please pass my best wishes on to the Club.

Mike

  • Dick Perry noted that former member David Howard says hello from the Bradenton area in Florida.
  • Sam Sanfratello announced that he was recently diagnosed with a second leukemia and will start chemo shortly.  He could be around for another couple of years. (Hopefully more!)  He thanked his Rotary friends for their support.  President Jeff told Sam to not be bashful about asking for help should he need it.
  • Ernie announced that members of the Literacy Committee met with the kindergarten classes at Winfield School this morning.  Ernie, Gil Sweet and Ted Goldwyn read to them and passed out their backpacks for the summer.
  • Bob Cole announced he is ducking out early and paid $5 for the privilege.

President Jeff then turned the meeting over to our presenter, Joy Overacker, Community Outreach Director for Steuben County Habitat for Humanity.

After the presentation, Deacon Ray, expressed his thanks to President Jeff for his leadership this past year on behalf of all of the members who will not be able to attend the  changeover picnic.

Adjourned at 12:58 pm. You can watch the meeting/presentation Zoom here.

2022-06-08 Rotary Reads! Severn School
Event
Corning NY; June 8, 2022. Severn School Rotary Reads Event: Thank you for all the help and support! I feel the Severn 2nd graders had a great time. Teachers gave positive feedback from parents and students ❤️ about the Rotary Reads Program.  After many years of storytelling, I noticed the reaction of the students. They were so engaged even with so many distractions and they seemed to crave connection. Please know, what we are doing makes them feel recognized, cared about, and supported. Having them participate in stories, and celebrating reading was heartwarming ♥️ and worth every bit of effort!!!

We had ice-cream left over and the kindergartens were able to have ice-cream. Thanks to the CPP Alternative HS students(Rotaract) they served up 😋 ice-cream to sweet peeps!!!

Today was heartwarming 💕 thank you all who helped make this happen!!!

Love 💘 Pauline

Calvin U. Smith Garden Event  06-07-2022

Corning NY: June 7, 2022. Students at Calvin U. Smith Elementary School fill their community garden beds with a variety of plants.  The kids planted tomatoes, peppers, garlic, carrots, herbs, and more.  Principal Heather Wolfe made sure that dirty hands were required of all participants.  Corning Rotary Club member and Master Gardener Volunteer Stu Sammis worked with the kids along with Heather and several members of the faculty.

The garden is supported by Heather Wolfe and the faculty and staff of Smith, Corning Rotary Club, the Smith PTA, First Presbyterian Church of Corning, and a grant from the Whole Kids Foundation.  The C-PPHS's greenhouse provided plants.

For most of the summer vacation, the garden will be tended by Summer School students.  Smith is the campus for all Summer School activities, great planning on Heather's part!
