Corning Rotary Sponsors Oratorical Speech Contest
Corning Rotary Sponsors Oratorical Speech Contest Second Place Winner Louis Ferratella

The Corning Rotary Club is proud to congratulate Louis Ferratella from the Corning-Painted Post Area High School on his second place finish in the District 7120 Rotary Oratorical Speech Contest on Ethics on 3-4-23.

The Oratorical Speech Contest was based on the Rotary Four-Way Test. Contestants presented a five to seven minute speech on how they plan to live their lives based on the four-way test. The Oratorical Contest helps build public speaking skills and confidence.

Lou was coached by retired communications teacher Judy Cross.  For practice, Lou presented his speech at a lunch meeting of the Corning Club. Club members were impressed by his speech, being reminded of how the Four-Way Test influences the lives of Rotarians. Lou has also participated in last year’s RYLA experience.

2023-3-2 Corning Rotary Awards Honorary Paul Harris
Corning Rotary Awards Honorary Paul Harris Fellow
For Extraordinary Community Service to Nancy Doutt

The Corning Rotary Club awarded a Paul Harris Fellow to community member Nancy Doutt at a recent club meeting.  The award was presented to Nancy by Rotarian Pauline Emery.

Nancy was honored for her community service work stretching more than 40 years. Her efforts target a variety of community needs and issues. Her efforts to promote literacy and education, target food insecurity, the arts and senior needs personify the issues about which she is eternally passionate.

A member of the Friends of the Library since 1982, Nancy Doutt has served as board member, vice president and president. She coordinated the twice yearly book sale for the library for many years and continues to this day. Support from the Friends of the Library book sale allows the library to provide quality programming for adults, teens and children and much more. These programs serve thousands of community members each year. The Friends Book Sale has provided well over $1,000,000 since the library’s reopening in 2000. Nancy has volunteered at the library since it reopened as the Southeast Steuben County Library in 2000. Nancy is in the library every week doing work to preserve local history.

Nancy has been a stalwart volunteer for over 40 years with Hospice of the Southern Tier (now Care First), Corning Meals on Wheels and the Rockwell Museum of Western Art. In 2007, Nancy received the Jefferson Award for Public Service. Of the five award recipients, she was selected to represent the Southern Tier of NY at the National Jefferson Awards in Washington, D.C.

Congratulations to Nancy with our sincere appreciation for her commitment to volunteering, exemplifying service above self within our community.

Corning NY: Rotary collaborating with Cornell Cooperative Extension Steuben County

Our club is working with Cornell Cooperative Extension Steuben County in celebrating 2023.
This project is part of the New York Agriculture in the Classroom project.

We will be reading in the elementary schools of the Corning Painted Post Area as well as in Addison. Times differ on Wednesday, March 22nd through Friday, March 24th.  Volunteers are needed to read the book, Tomatoes for Neela, and to help with a planting project. SIGN UP HERE. This is a short time commitment with a huge payback to the kids!

Agricultural Literacy Week celebrates the connection of food and culture and how it ties generations together. Food is the center of celebrations in families and cultures, and though our backgrounds may be different, many of the same ingredients can be found as the base of the dishes we love.  We will explore with Neela how tomatoes are grown and the ways they are used in cooking her favorite foods from recipes passed down by her grandmother in India.
