Club Meeting 8-19-21
Next Club Meeting: August 26th Zoom
Program:  Club Presentation and Discussion: Local Flooding and Our Response

8-19-21 Zoom Club Meeting [recording]   Jeff Ugoretz opened the meeting at 12:10 p.m. with the ringing of a bell; the recorded singing (by Crosby Stills and Nash) of “My country ‘tis of Thee”; the Pledge of Allegiance; and an invocation by Ray Defendorf.

Announcements
  • Jeff Ugoretz reported that the Club plans to return to in-person meetings at noon on September 9 at the [former] Radisson—God willing and the River don’t rise. Apparently, the Radisson has new ownership, and it is now the Double Tree. Jan Harvey said she is working with the new management on the lunch; and the current plan is for box lunches with reservations and payments in advance. Jeff said he would notify members by e-mail if there are any changes to the lunch arrangements.

  • Jeff also said plans are being made for meeting with the District Governor on September 16. It is still not clear whether the meeting will be in-person or by Zoom; but Jeff will notify members by e-mail of the details of the meeting.

  • Quick reminder - to join the weekly meeting, just go to any recent bulletin, look for a Meeting Story and click on the Zoom link at the top [you can also make it a favorite]. In addition, it's on our home page in ClubRunner.

  • Tom O’Brien said he will be travelling next week and unable to do the Cogs for the August 26 meeting. Rick Davis and Andy Rochester volunteered to do the Cogs for that meeting.

  • Bill Boland gave a brief update for the Cherry Blossom Trail Project.  He said that Rotary has completed its plan for the project and has delivered it to the City, which is now responsible for completing the project. Trees are scheduled for delivery on September 20; and planting will start on September 21. Three teams have been set up for planting, and the City will provide training for the workers.
  • Jeff Ugoretz thanked Stacy Ward for agreeing to chair the Club’s Membership Committee; and he thanked Dale Wexell for heading up the Spelling Bee Committee.
Community Service / Opportunities:
  • Andy Rochester reminded the members that the Salvation Army’s Shepherd’s Table event August 29th 4-5:30 PM needs volunteers for preparation, purchasing items and serving.
    • We'll need 3 more volunteers to do the packing/serving on 8-29. Masking is required, regardless of vaccination status [volunteers and attendees].

    • If you'd like to participate, but aren't able to drop off your food contributions, just let me know and we'll arrange to get the items to the Salvation Army for you. We still need:

    • We're looking forward to our Club coming together once again to give back to the community this Sunday afternoon!

Program:   Ray Defendorf gave a presentation concerning a vacation that he and Pat took along the Civil Rights Trail, celebrating the Civil Rights movement in the United States. Ray and Pat visited and showed pictures of many cities and sites where significant events relating to the ending of segregation occurred. Ray provided the history that goes along with the cities and sites. The pictures and Ray’s talk can be viewed by clicking here.
