Club Meeting 2-9-23
The club met for lunch at noon at the Corning Radisson soon-to-be DoubleTree Hotel.  President Stu called the meeting to order at 12:05 pm with the ringing of the bell. Club members sang My Country ‘Tis of Thee and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Deacon Ray Defendorf gave the invocation.

Club Service: Bill Boland served as photographer, Ray Defendorf gave the invocation, and Ted Goldwyn was the Cogs editor.

Guests included Jaya Mangialiri, of the Southern Tier Indian Association, and Kendra Morhess, our soon-to-be newest member. We also hosted Tom Brown, visiting Rotarian from the Elmira Rotary Club.

Announcements: President Stu shared the sad news that our very own Joe Muccigrosso passed away last Sunday. Joe was a member of the club for 37 years, and was 97 years old when he passed. He was also Stu’s dear neighbor. Calling hours were held at Carpenter’s Funeral Home on Friday, February 10. There was a strong showing of Rotarians, who gathered at 4:30 to pay their respects together. The funeral mass was held in Horseheads on Saturday, February 11.

Stu also announced that the Groundhog Day Pancake Supper raised a net profit of roughly $1,000. This was a little less than past years, but we should all be proud of the effort, and these funds will once again go toward supporting worthwhile projects in our local community, per tradition.

Kate Foss was announced as the new chair of the Sustaining Fund committee. She plans an organizational meeting for later this month, so keep an eye out for an email hitting your inbox soon.

Jim Webb shared that our club is sponsoring a student to the District's oratorical contest, an annual event that is jointly sponsored by Rochester area colleges and Rotary District 7120. The oratorical contest is a competition where students deliver a 5 to 7-minute speech based on Rotary's 4-way test. This year's speech must be on the topic of how the speaker plans to live their life, based on the 4-way test. Up to $10,000 in prize money is available to the winner. Louis Ferratella is competing on behalf of our club. He is a familiar face, as he attended RYLA last summer. His mother, as well as his coach, Judy Cross joined Lou at the meeting. Lou shared his speech with us, which discussed his desire to be a politician, while still maintaining integrity in accordance with the 4-way Test. Lou competed in the initial round on Saturday, February 11 in Bloomfield, and if he makes it to the finals he would compete on February 25 in Canandaigua.

Program:  Paula Smith introduced Sue Gruber and Mike Hurley, who presented on gave practical tips on aging in place.

It is Spelling Bee Time 🐝  March 11, 2023
    It is Spelling Bee Time!

March 11th is the Annual Regional Scripps Spelling Bee competition sponsored by the Rotary Club of Corning! This year we have 41 schools with 82 spellers participating including all the Corning Painted Post elementary schools, the middle school and three private schools.

The competition is being held at the Corning Painted Post Middle School from 7:30 AM to end approximately 2:00 PM.  Volunteers are needed!!!!!  We have slots set up for at least 25 Rotarians to pitch in.  (Click here to sign-up). Bring a guest; community members are welcome -- be part of the Rotary experience ⚙️.

Each speller is already a winner as they all have competed in their local school’s spelling bee. Coming to the regional bee is an exciting experience for them. Past winners of our Regional Spelling Bee have done well at the national competition in Washington DC. We actually had two of our regional winners go on to win the national competition!

This is a fun event to volunteer for.  Sign up now and put the date on your calendar. This will serve as our service event for the month of March.
