Gaffer District's Harvest Festival this brought a large number of vendors, guests, pretty nice weather -- and Corning Rotary to Market Street. We learned from our booth last year that as much as we like cider and donuts, so do the bees. So .... we substituted ice old water to go with our donuts this year. No sugar, no gluten, no bees 🐝... [the bees were only slightly interested in the donuts].
Questions at the booth included "what is Rotary?" "what does Corning Rotary do?" and "how do I join?". Our club members served the donuts and cold water, and answers to questions about our club activities and goals. The Corning Rotary club has been active in the community since 1921 and is committed to making a positive impact through a range of service projects and initiatives. The Corning Rotary club has identified several focus areas that reflect its members' interests and the needs of the community. These areas include environment, health and safety, combating food insecurity, literacy, international, and youth.
For example, the club has organized events and initiatives aimed at promoting environmental stewardship and sustainability, such as tree-planting, community and school gardens and cleanup programs.
In the area of health and safety, the Corning Rotary has supported initiatives focused on improving access to healthcare and promoting disease prevention by supporting PolioPlus, CPR classes, and most recently a program for free smoke detectors for local residents. The club has also worked to combat hunger and food insecurity in the community by donations of items and volunteers to work at local food banks and pantries
In the area of literacy, the Corning Rotary club has supported ongoing reading programs in several of our schools and initiatives aimed at promoting education and literacy among young people. The club has also been involved in international projects, including supporting efforts to provide clean water and sanitation in developing countries.
Members of the community are welcome to participate in many of our service projects - most are just a couple of hours, working together. Signups are shown in our EVENTS area on the left side of our home page. This is a great opportunity [whether coming to a meeting or working with us] to learn more about Rotary in our community.
