Dick Pope Obituary

It is with saddened hearts that the Corning Club announces the passing, on Feb 1, 2026, of long-time Rotarian Richard “Dick” Pope.

Dick was a dedicated 50-year member and mainstay of the club. He was also a Paul Harris Fellow. He recruited many new members, instilling a strong sense of service and enthusiasm.

While involved in many club committees, Dick’s claim to fame was being instrumental in establishing the Corning Rotary Club as the main sponsor for the Regional Scripps Spelling Bee for the Southern Tier of New York. This sponsorship continues to this day, with over 26 school districts sending spellers for the chance to win and go to the National Scripps Spelling Bee in Washington, DC.

As a devoted humanitarian, he served as a member of Three Rivers Development Foundation, Corning Community College Development Foundation, Director and President of The Greater Corning Area Chamber of Commerce, founding member of Spencer Crest Nature Center, and the Bob Rockwell Memorial Fund. He also served on the Town of Corning Planning Board for over thirty years. Dick was awarded The Jefferson Award for public service and passionately supported the historic preservation of Market Street.

[from Andy] You can continue Dick's love of the Spelling Bee by volunteering at the upcoming Spelling Bee on Saturday, 3/7/26, 7:30-1:30pm at Corning Painted Post Middle School! We're expecting 52 spellers from 26 districts. 🔸Please consider volunteering at the event. To sign-up, click here.
